Voysey House

Ambit, in partnership with DMFK, completed the refurbishment of Voysey House, a Grade II* listed building originally constructed in 1902 as an extension of the Sanderson wallpaper factory. As the only commercial building designed by renowned modernist architect C.F.A. Voysey, this project required an approach that respected its architectural significance while introducing modern, sustainable features.

Restoring Legacy

The project required a careful balance of restoration and transformation. Key elements of Voysey House’s original design were brought back to life, including the white-glazed brick façade, timber flooring, and distinctive architectural details. These heritage features were complemented by structural enhancements, such as installing industrial beams to improve load-bearing capacity and longevity.

A full-core refurbishment was undertaken to improve circulation and accessibility. Office spaces were expanded and upgraded, while the windows were refurbished to enhance thermal performance without compromising the building’s aesthetic integrity. Upgraded WCs and improved facilities provide modern conveniences while maintaining the overall character of the space.

For a Greener Future

Solar panels were installed on the roof to provide renewable energy, reducing reliance on traditional power sources. Energy monitoring software was implemented to track consumption and improve efficiency, while a Casambi lighting control system was introduced to optimise energy use.

The refurbishment received a 41/45 score on the Considerate Construction Scheme, reflecting a strong commitment to responsible construction practices. By integrating sustainable solutions within a heritage setting, the project demonstrates how listed buildings can be revitalised to meet modern workplace standards without compromising their historical value.
