Czarnikow’s new London headquarters by Modus and Platfform captures the spirit of a business built on history yet driven by progress. With roots in sugar and coffee trading, the company has evolved into a global leader in supply chain solutions. Their move to 2 More London Place, overlooking the Thames, marks a symbolic return to their roots – this time through a modern lens of sustainability and growth.
Project in Brief
- A workspace linking Czarnikow’s heritage with sustainable design.
- Story-led details inspired by sugar and coffee.
- Flexible, people-first design with views of the Thames.
Design Rooted in Heritage and Craft
In the reception, contrasting marble surfaces echo the swirl of mixed brown and white sugar, a subtle tribute to the company’s origins. The setting pairs NORR11’s Barnum Bouclé Hippo Sofa with Fredericia’s Savannah Lounge Chairs in natural leather and FSC-certified oak, creating a calm balance of texture and tone. The bespoke reception logo, produced by Sophia Hagen and Artistic Statements, is made from 3D-printed sugar and designed to appear as if it’s floating within the joinery, immediately drawing the eye to the design and then through the glass to the office beyond.
With bleacher seating inspired by shipping containers, the town hall anchors the workspace as a flexible hub for gatherings and events. Brunner’s Ray Table Flex System, with extendable sections that can be pulled apart, reconfigured, or joined, creates adaptable surfaces for team meetings and large-scale sessions.
Across teapoints and breakout areas, NORR11’s modular Studio Sofa in Hallingdal wool introduces warmth, alongside Roger Lewis and NaughtOne tables in oak tones. Seating ranges from Ondarreta Ginger Lounge and Ginger Lounge Sled to Ferm Living Herman Lounge Chairs, while Mater Conscious Chairs made from coffee waste complete a reconfigurable, people-first design. The teapoint worktops are made entirely from recycles plastic (The Good Plastic Company’s Polygood range), referencing Czarnikow’s presence in the sustainable packaging industry.
Designed for People, Built for the Future
A defining decision was to give staff the best river views, positioning workstations along the Thames frontage while relocating the teapoint and meeting rooms to a more central part of the floorplan. This approach balances wellbeing and community, turning everyday workspaces into places of inspiration.
Across the floorplate, the earthy tones and tactile materials palette mirror Czarnikow’s focus on natural products. Lighter zones encourage calm and focus, while moments of play, like a bespoke rug designed by the client that doubles as a checkerboard, express personality and creativity. Baux wood wool panels provide acoustic performance and strong sustainability credentials in meeting rooms.
Care went into making choices that would stand the test of time in their impact, materials, and use. This created a workplace that captures Czarnikow’s commitment to circular design and conscious growth, where heritage and innovation sit side by side.
