Two partnered with long-term client Work.Life to revitalise The Typewriter Building at 140 Borough High Street, transforming it into a vibrant, multi-functional workspace. Originally built in 1956 for a typewriter company, the building carries historical significance that shaped the design approach. The challenge was to honour the building’s mid-century heritage while creating a dynamic environment aligned with Work.Life’s modern, playful identity.

Project in Brief

  • Defined distinct zones for collaboration, focused work, and social interaction.
  • Preserved original architectural features alongside contemporary design elements.
  • Introduced biophilic elements to enhance wellbeing and create a vibrant atmosphere.

Balancing Heritage with Modernity

The design balances respect for the building’s history with the energy of Work.Life’s brand. Original features such as terrazzo flooring, staircases, and balustrades were preserved, celebrating the building’s 1950s character. These heritage elements are complemented by contemporary materials, bold colours, and modern furnishings that reflect Work.Life’s distinctive style.

The ground floor is the heart of the space, featuring hot desks, banquette seating, private phone booths, and a winter garden filled with natural light. A feature tree and bespoke seating create a calm, inviting environment, while typewriter key-inspired signage and vintage rattan panels on the teapoint bar subtly reference the building’s origins.

A Workspace for Community and Creativity

Each floor was designed with a unique colour palette to support different working styles and create a strong sense of identity. Communal teapoints and breakout areas are strategically placed to encourage spontaneous interactions, while quieter zones cater to focused work. The winter garden serves as both a social space and a peaceful retreat, offering versatility for members to choose how they work best.

Playful design elements, such as colourful typewriters displayed in the winter garden, add character and reinforce the connection to the building’s history. Biophilic touches, including plants and natural materials, promote wellbeing and contribute to a vibrant, energising environment.

Designed for Community and Growth

The transformation of The Typewriter Building is a testament to thoughtful design that respects the past while embracing the future. The workspace reflects Work.Life’s values, community, creativity, and sustainability to create an environment that supports connection, productivity, and growth. This revitalised space offers a fresh take on coworking, blending historical charm with modern functionality to meet the needs of today’s dynamic workforce.
